Ian Coristine
The story of a chance encounter
Ian Coristine is an atypical photographer. In 1992, Ian flew his Challenger ultralight up the St. Lawrence River, along the borders of Canada and the United States, until he came upon the Thousand Islands... and instantly fell in love with the region. Infatuated, he bought one of the 1,865 islands that was ideal for his plane, restored its hundred-year-old cottage, and in the process, transformed his life. Since that first serendipitous flight, the archipelago’s breathtaking scenery has been his source of inspiration.
Coristine’s work is incredibly rich. Combining aerial, landscape, and wildlife photographs, Ian invites us to share his travels. The light and color intensity of his images create paintings that pay homage to the beauty of the islands. Twilight and early dawn aerial landscapes with majestic freighters passing through the archipelago’s calm waters are among the numerous windows that Ian Coristime has opened up on a world in which human beings seem to coexist in harmony with the environment.
To share his love of this region, Ian Coristine has published extensively. His first book of photographs, The 1000 Islands, was an enormous success. In 2005, he published Water, Wind and Sky, followed by The Thousand Islands in 2006, and then The very best of Ian Coristine's 1000 Islands in 2010. All of his books have been best-sellers, two winning the prestigious international Benjamin Franklin Award for Excellence in Printing. His images have been published in numerous magazines throughout the world as well is in many other books about the region. His work has also been featured in various exhibits in Canada and in the United States.
