Paco Márquez

Paco Márquez specializes in advertising photography. Born in Mexico and raised on the island of Puerto Rico, Paco has always been passionate about photography. His father, a physician, told him he would not be able to earn a living as a photographer; it took him five years at the University of Puerto Rico to earn a degree in Psychology.

Throughout and after his university studies, Paco continued to take and print his own black-and-white photos. A lucky break got him a job as in-house photographer at Leo Burnett PR where he learned what the advertising business was like and fell in love with the pace and the demands of it. Up to this time, Paco had been "winging it" as far as technique was concerned. Realizing that to be successful as an advertising photographer he would need a formal education in design and photography, he applied to the Art Center College of Design (Pasadena, California)—the school with the best reputation and a curriculum fully geared towards the advertising field. Paco completed the four year curriculum in two years and eight months, graduating with honors and his first son.

Just out of school Paco assisted photographers in LA, worked as an industrial photographer and spent a year working for an advertising agency in Mexico. He returned to Puerto Rico around 1982.

With the money he’d saved, he bought some strobes, set up shop in a one car garage and started knocking on doors. Now, 23 years later he’s still in business and doing well.
