DxO DOP to reduce the size and cost of camera modules

DxO DOP concepts

In a traditional camera module design, the image processing is done completely independently of the lens design. The sensor is chosen, then the optics. An ISP is then adapted to the sensor and optics.

DxO DOP technology breaks century-old optics design limitations by co-optimizing the image processing and the optics as a whole system. The result is that the accessible space of lens performance is greatly enlarged.

A more detailed view of one of the possible system optimizations is available via this scientific article published in Photonics Spectra.

DxO DOP successes so far

Palm Pre

DxO DOP is in mass production and has been deployed in its EDOF incarnation in the Palm Pre and a number of other phones from major OEM vendors. In these phones, DxO DOP is used to remove the autofocus mechanism (replacing it with Extend the Depth Of Field – EDOF), reduce the module size, reduce the cost, and increase the aperture.

Camera module production samples with DxO technologies

DxO DOP is available in several chips from several sensor vendors covering resolutions from 3 and 5 megapixels to 8 megapixels. (See one of the public announcements here.)

DOMAP – DxO DOP Digital Optics Manufacturer Partnership

DOMAP is a partnership between DxO Labs and optical manufacturers. By transferring some its intellectual property to the optical manufacturers, DxO Labs enables the manufacturers to design and manufacture their own lenses that are compatible with DxO DOP technology.
