Why we use DxO Optics Pro:
- First and foremost, control. The more control we have, the better the quality of the final product. For the past three years, since we moved to the use of RAW images exclusively, the search for software that would enable us to have that control has continued. DxO Optics has given us that control.
- Second, repeatability is absolutely critical. We must be sure that if a thousand images from a single event go through our workflow, each and every one is the same. Our standards are exacting and we will not put our logo on a photo if it doesn’t meet our requirements for technical excellence. DxO Optics has enhanced our ability to offer consistently high quality images.
- Third, flexibility. While as a company we adhere to a single work flow, there are slight variances. JD, for example, prefers to convert RAW images to monochrome while the images are still RAW. Falcon and Rayn prefer to do that later. Both styles can be accommodated without loss of overall image quality. With DxO Optics, using the Color and Exposure settings it is also possible to selective color a RAW image prior to processing in Photoshop. This further enhances the images overall final quality.
General Advice:
DxO Optics offers an incredible array of options. To most effectively use DxO it is important to un-learn whatever one has learned about RAW image processing. Don’t assume that because you use Canon’s DPP or Phase 1’s Capture Pro or Adobe’s RAW plug-in you can easily implement DxO Optics.
Take time to think through your existing workflow.
1. What is it you want to accomplish?
2. How do you achieve consistency across large numbers of images currently?
3. What look and feel do you want your images to have?
4. Can you categorize your workflow into types of images – for example do you process fashion and glamour one way, weddings another, and portraiture still another? If so, take time to build presets in DxO for each of these before you start actual production.
