Heinz Kleim

Heinz Kleim began taking pictures at the age of 16 as a way of capturing his impressions of the people and places he encountered. He started by using his sister’s camera; he won his first camera as the first prize in a photo-contest (a landscape shot of his home region).

Four years later, he became captivated with the untapped possibilities of manipulating his images on a computer. Although he studied graphic design in high school, he felt it wasn’t a very promising career path; and he went on to study economics and become an economist.

Heinz Kleim’s love of and interest in photography and computer-aided manipulation of photos continued to grow. After a decade as an economist he decided to embark on the métier of graphic-designer and photographer. He is self-taught in both graphic design and photography; and has built a successful photo and design studio as well as developing his art portfolio. Favorite photo subjects remain musicians, concerts, street dance and other contemporary events; his commercial photography work includes advertising commissions in addition to portraits, wedding photography and an ongoing series on the city of Berlin. Heinz Kleim admits to being more fascinated by what he can do to an image than actually taking the photo. His love of his adopted city of Berlin continues to inspire him and has led to several shows on the subject, the latest held in Tokyo as part of “Expressions by young photographers in Germany 2005”.
