DxO Labs technologies at the heart of the Palm Pre camera
DxO Labs participated in the success of the Palm Pre smartphone camera, both as an EDOF provider with DxO DOP, and as an ISP technology provider to ensure that the camera provides the best color, contrast and sharpness.
Here are some quotes about the Palm Pre’s camera:
Arstechnica:
- Palm really invested in the camera, which takes advantage of the TI OMAP 3430's DSP hardware in combination with some image processing software provided by a French company called DXO.
- They're really in the [area of] digital SLRs, and they helped us out with auto-white balance, auto-exposure, and extended depth-of-field, which allows you to do infinite focus, and some cool close shots.
Wireless and Mobile News:
- The new Palm Pre smartphone uses the latest imaging correction software from DxO Labs. DxO is used by photo brands like Canon and Nikon for image processing and correction. Although the Palm Pre Camera is only 3.2 megapixels, when you add this advanced technology it should take brilliant beautiful photos.
- DxO Labs products correct images at very sophisticated levels.
- Look, we're just going to say it: we love the Pre's camera. There are two things happening here that make it lovable. First, it's 3.2 megapixels, which makes it at least competitive with its contemporaries. Second, Palm has done something totally radical in webOS -- they've made it so the image processing is backloaded when you're shooting. What that means is that you can snap away without having to sit through the shutter lag you're probably used to, allowing you to actually use the thing like a real camera. Furthermore, the image quality we saw was more than sufficient for on-the-scene shots, with particular clarity and color in daylight shots, though a surprising amount of definition in low light situations as well. Oh, and did we mention it has a flash?
- The 3MP camera is incredibly fast—there's virtually no shutter lag….
- The camera's color balance is excellent—whites look white—, and photos are well balanced in low light.
- The Palm Pre's three-megapixel camera takes crisp, well-focused images….
- Of all the cell-phone cameras I tested, the Palm Pre edged ahead of the others in sharpness and depth of detail.
- …Color balance is excellent….
- …Good image processing helps….
- …The resulting pictures are quite nice….
- …The Pre’s 3-megapixel camera produces surprisingly good quality images.
