[...] There is obvious benefit to having the most pleasing image to work with at the very start of the image editing process. And while each app handles colors from some camera models better than others, it's hard to find much fault with DxO Optics Pro 8's default settings.

DxO clearly knows a thing or two about lenses. [...] Lens corrections are applied to images by default, and there’s even subtle colour correction via the Smart Lighting tool. This is a new feature in version 8, and it did a superb job of tweaking the luminance curve to reveal details in shadows and highlights without excessively altering the rest of the image.

Bugged by that edge distortion (anamorphosis) at the sides of your wide-angle photos? DxO’s new software uses its lens know-how to fix that, as well as keystoning and tilted horizons, recropping as needed and showing you side-by-side before and after versions.

DxO ViewPoint does what no Perspective control can. The product [is] not just useful but beloved. It knows how to correct for wide angle distortions and it can credibly recast your image after you indicate just which lines are converging. And it does more, letting you fade the correction back to something that looks a bit less like an isometric drawing and chose a different crop. Those are two very nice touches that make the product not just useful but beloved. You know if you need this. You've hungered for it. But now, at least, you can make that omelette. I did enjoy working with the variations scheme the program affords, and especially with the Creative Presets [...]where the poetic descriptors did triumph, and with the ability to choose among what must be hundreds of thousands of options for how an image could be rendered. The Software succeeds in very easy-to-use, straightforward manner that might make some creative photographers who have sweated and labored over the intricacies of programs like Photoshop blush.

It offers its own brand of nondestructive image editing, with tonal, exposure, geometric, and optical corrections that make it stand apart from the crowd. .Noise Removal (NR) in DxO Optics Pro is much easier to use than any NR plug-in I’ve ever encountered, and better. Another neat tool is single-shot HDR. Normally, I don’t believe in such expedient measures, but Optics Pro has me believing that it can be done, and done well

It's a rare look at one of the world's preeminent camera testers. So you think you're a camera expert?
