Eric Bouvet
A love of film
in a digital world
The multi-award-winning photographer with more than 40 years of experience tells us why DxO FilmPack 8 is the best choice for film lovers who shoot RAW.
“In today’s digital age, the only way to capture the authenticity of film is with DxO FilmPack 8.”

A photographer’s challenge:
DxO FilmPack 8 versus film itself
For the launch of DxO FilmPack8, we invited photographer Eric Bouvet to put FilmPack to the test against his beloved analog methods. Armed with several rolls of film, he set out to capture a series of images — shooting digital versions alongside each one.
Having started shooting film in the 1980s and documenting major events around the world, Bouvet has a deep understanding of image making and an even deeper appreciation of film. He’s the perfect photographer to discover how good DxO FilmPack really is.
Check out the results, and find out if DxO FilmPack8 can truly capture some analog soul.

Shooting on Lake Annecy
with Fujifilm Velvia 100
Golden hour on a summer’s afternoon in the foothills of the French Alps makes for magical colors, and Fujifilm Velvia 100 would be an obvious choice for many photographers. It loves reds and blues, and, leaning slightly cold, it gives the water a refreshing feel and the sky some extra depth, but without losing the warmth of the sun as it hits the bather’s skin.
Why does Bouvet keep coming back to film despite all of the technological advances since the emergence of digital? “Discipline and light,” he explains. “I’m a technical photographer from a generation where the photograph at the moment of pressing the shutter was the final image. We chose our film for the look we wanted. Film forces attention — especially with slide film where, if you’re half a stop off, it’s dead.”
DxO FilmPack8 does an exceptional job of recreating the look and feel of this classic Fujifilm stock, and Bouvet was only able to distinguish between the two images by remembering which photo he took first, aided by the position of the kayaker off in the distance.

Hitting the streets of Paris with
Kodak Tri-X 400
Given how much it was loved by the likes of Robert Frank and Sebastião Salgado, even just loading a roll of the iconic Kodak Tri-X into your camera can be enough to put you in the zone. With its pronounced grain and rich blacks, it’s ideal for capturing special moments out in the city, such as this couple embracing alongside one of the many bridges that cross the Seine river.
“Film has roundness, softness, a certain ‘life,’” says Bouvet. “Digital can feel surgical — especially at today’s resolutions — but FilmPack helps me rediscover that gentleness.”

On the beach in the Basque country with
Fujifilm Neopan Acros 100
Fujifilm Neopan Acros 100 packs in a huge range of exposure latitude, giving Bouvet plenty of options when capturing this high-contrast scene on the beach at Saint Jean de Luz, a fishing town nestled at the mouth of the Nivelle river. There’s plenty of contrast but the smooth tonal gradations make both the sand the skin tones feel smooth and natural. Maybe this makes the clock feel even more surreal.
The clock is also a clue, as Bouvet knows which camera he picked up first. Otherwise, the tonality and contrast carefully replicated in DxO FilmPack8 would make it almost impossible to differentiate between the two images.
This is why DxO FilmPack really stands out against the competition. “FilmPack goes into the file,” says Bouvet. “It’s not just a filter on top. It aims for the same response curve as film. That’s why it feels right.”
